It is, perhaps, a truth universally acknowledged by all photographers shooting metal bands that, should the band lean on the heavy side of things, a red wash of lights for the whole set seems like the best way to go. I dunno, maybe I should have just bought the lighting guy a drink beforehand... or a genki drink. Maybe the genki drink. Red lights aside, Tokyo-based hardcore metal act In For The Kill got the crowd going nicely last weekend, which is partly why I decided I'd only shoot three songs! They were the best act of the night last Sunday (except for Broken Life, of course;p), and this seemed evident from the moment they came on stage to set up - my friend remarked that you could see their experience merely from how they walked around the stage.
To deal with the loss of, well, everything in red light, I converted the images to a high-contrast black and white courtesy of Matthias Hombauer's Rockstar Black and White Lightroom Presets. Funnily enough, I developed a Preset specifically for Vorchaos in order to deal with red lights, but it seems to only really do the trick on Vorchaos shots, not other bands. Maybe, we can run an experiment to see if this is true later this month when my favourite Tokyo metallers Vorchaos play with In For The Kill in support of Unveil Raze.
